Dear IUPUI Community,

On February 13, 2023, the police received a call around 8:30 pm about shots fired at two locations on the East Lansing campus of Michigan State University (MSU). Three students were killed, and five others were critically wounded, authorities said. The deceased victims have been identified as junior Arielle Anderson, sophomore Brian Fraser, and junior Alexandria Verner. The gunman was later found dead in Lansing of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
This becomes the first mass shooting at a U.S. school this year; however, nationwide, there have been a total of 71 shootings in just six weeks.
As the Undergraduate Student Government at IUPUI, we are sending our love and support to the family members of the victims and to all the MSU community during this critical time. Our hearts ache and we grieve with you.
For further resources, if you are encountered with an active shooter on your campus , your best option is to run, when a safe path is available, trying to escape the attack. The second option is to hide by remaining silent, closing all windows, and doors, and turning off the lights. If none of the previous options are possible, your last alternative is to fight the shooter by throwing objects aiming its eyes.
Incidents like this can be overwhelming and triggering. If you feel the need to talk to someone, please contact our CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) representatives, who will guide you through individual counseling or group sessions. In addition, please keep an eye on any notifications that might be sent from IU Notify via email and/or text. Finally, we recommend downloading the Guardian App to report any incident and to more easily reach the police.
